united methodist men

The purpose of the United Methodist Men is to engage in a variety of Christ-centered activities for the benefit of the ministries, programs, and activities of St. Paul's UMC. Since its formation in 1948, our men's organization strives to create opportunities for men of the church to be in service to Christ and to the community. We count all male members and friends among the UMM! There are no dues or fees to join. Please scroll down to learn about our current activities.

UMM Activities

September 16, 2026

6:30-8:30 PM

Fellowship Hall

After a long lapse, the UMM is resuming periodic suppers & general meetings. All men of the church and their sons are invited to this gathering. For September, we will have subs & pizza from Continental as we often did before Covid. We will also have a nice dessert of some kind. The cost for all attendees will be $8. If you would like to attend, please help us plan by RSVPing. Send an email to Jerry Watkins directly or email the church office at stpaulsunited@stpaulsk.org for his contact info.

We currently also have a ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) group that goes out for lunch about once a month.

In the past, we have also been able to enjoy activities like our annual Chili Cook-Off, informational programs, recreational activities like trips to the baseball game or other activities as our members desire.

The United Methodist Men raise funds for charities through events such as the annual Apple Sale and monthly Pancake Breakfasts! Our event volunteers include men, women, children, and families. Come be with us! We have a long tradition of donating financial support and volunteer time to many groups and projects including:

Boy Scout Troop #439, Venture Crew, and Cub Scout Pack #478

St. Paul's Library

The Educational Award Fund

St. Paul's Hunger Ministry

St. Paul's Youth Travel and Mission Projects

UMM APPLE SALE

The UMM-sponsored Apple Sale happens each Fall! When the varieties of fresh orchard apples are confirmed and the order form is ready, you will find it here.

Missed the pre-order window? Don't worry! We will still have plenty of delicious apples, apple cider, applesauce, and apple butter for walk-up customers!

All orders should be picked up at our "apple stand" at the main entrance of St. Paul's UMC at 10401 Armory Ave., Kensington MD, 20895. Walk-up customers are welcome to use cash, check, or pay with your mobile device.

FIND YOUR NEW FAVORITE!

Our apples and related products come from Scenic View Orchard in Sabillasville, MD. We will have 7 varieties of apple for 2025. The apple types vary each year depending on the harvest! Several of our varieties are heirloom apple types not typically found in most grocery stores. Check out the descriptions below and then try some for yourself. You might find a new favorite.

Varieties are listed here from "sweetest" to "most tart" - but your individual taste bud experience may vary!

  • Fuji: Very firm and extra sweet, popular for eating fresh. Light red and green stripey color. Has a longer shelf life than many other varieties. First developed in Japan through cross-pollination of the Red Delicious and Virginia Ralls Janet varieties in the late 1930s.
  • Golden Delicious: Sweet and mellow. A "classic" apple discovered in West Virginia at the end of the 19th century. Excellent for snacking and all-purpose cooking.
  • Cameo: A modern sweet variety with mellow aromatic notes. Similar to Red Delicious but with firmer texture. Nice for snacking; good in surprise food pairings with savory flavors like cheddar cheese or bacon. Originated at a family farm in Dryden, Washington State, where it was discovered in 1987.
  • Crimson Crisp:  A “newer” variety introduced in 2004 through the Purdue-Rutgers-Illinois apple co-op breeding program. Related to the grocery-store favorite Honeycrisp but with a more tart taste. Bright red outside with a very firm, crisp texture. Usually eaten fresh but they hold their shape well when cooked. They keep their freshness an exceptionally long time on the shelf.
  • Stayman: Firm with rich robust flavor, mildly tart. Good all-purpose apple that gives a nice flavor to cider, applesauce, and apple butter. This variety was developed in 1866 in Kansas by Joseph Stayman using Winesap parent trees.
  • Nittany: Crisp, juicy, and tart. Red and yellow color outside. When cut, they brown more slowly than many other varieties. Developed in 1979 in Pennsylvania as a cross between York and Golden Delicious and named after the Penn State mascot, the nittany lion.
  • Cortland: Bold red color with dark red streaks and/or a greenish blush and sweet-tart white insides. This apple variety dates back to 1898, when it was raised at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station as a cross between the Ben Davis and the McIntosh apples, and named after Cortland County NY. Most often used for apple sauce, apple butter, or juice but also nice on sandwiches when thinly sliced.

Community Pancake Breakfast - We're Back!

After a considerable break during the height of the covid pandemic, the UMM is again holding Pancake Breakfast events in the fellowship hall on the first Saturday of the month, September through June. Please read more on our Pancake Breakfast page!

Although the UMM sponsors these events, proceeds benefit St. Paul's and regional charities. These events are possible because of our volunteers! There are plenty of spots for all men, women, youth, and even families. Please contact Jerry Watkins directly for more information!

Update: No Yard Sale

The UMM regrets to announce that we will not be holding a Yard Sale going forward.

We know that the twice-a-year indoor yard sale was a highlight for many bargain-hunters, and we were happy that our yard sale helped keep countless household items out of landfills, and provided affordable goods for everyone in our community.

Unfortunately, we do not presently have the personnel to run a successful Yard Sale, and do not have plans to return to hosting sales in the near future.
