FIND YOUR NEW FAVORITE!
Our apples and related products come from Scenic View Orchard in Sabillasville, MD. We will have 7 varieties of apple this year. The apple types vary each year depending on the harvest! Several of our varieties are heirloom apple types not typically found in most grocery stores. Check out the descriptions below and then try some for yourself. You might find a new favorite.
Varieties are listed here from "sweetest" to "most tart" - but your individual taste bud experience may vary!
- Fuji: Very firm and extra sweet, popular for eating fresh. Light red and green stripey color. Has a longer shelf life than many other varieties. First developed in Japan through cross-pollination of the Red Delicious and Virginia Ralls Janet varieties in the late 1930s.
- Golden Delicious: Sweet and mellow. A "classic" apple discovered in West Virginia at the end of the 19th century. Excellent for snacking and all-purpose cooking.
- Cameo: A modern sweet variety with mellow aromatic notes. Similar to Red Delicious but with firmer texture. Nice for snacking; good in surprise food pairings with savory flavors like cheddar cheese or bacon. Originated at a family farm in Dryden, Washington State, where it was discovered in 1987.
- Crimson Crisp: A “newer” variety introduced in 2004 through the Purdue-Rutgers-Illinois apple co-op breeding program. Related to the grocery-store favorite Honeycrisp but with a more tart taste. Bright red outside with a very firm, crisp texture. Usually eaten fresh but they hold their shape well when cooked. They keep their freshness an exceptionally long time on the shelf.
- Stayman: Firm with rich robust flavor, mildly tart. Good all-purpose apple that gives a nice flavor to cider, applesauce, and apple butter. This variety was developed in 1866 in Kansas by Joseph Stayman using Winesap parent trees.
- Nittany: Crisp, juicy, and tart. Red and yellow color outside. When cut, they brown more slowly than many other varieties. Developed in 1979 in Pennsylvania as a cross between York and Golden Delicious and named after the Penn State mascot, the nittany lion.
- Cortland: Bold red color with dark red streaks and/or a greenish blush and sweet-tart white insides. This apple variety dates back to 1898, when it was raised at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station as a cross between the Ben Davis and the McIntosh apples, and named after Cortland County NY. Most often used for apple sauce, apple butter, or juice but also nice on sandwiches when thinly sliced.

On pick-up/sale days, helpers distribute apple orders and sell apples to walk-up customers. If you are willing and able help, please contact Jim Heins or Jerry Watkins directly. If you don't have their cell phone number or personal email, please contact Erin Steele at the church office at stpaulsunited@stpaulsk.org to get started.
